Tips for cheap charging in Hilo
Hilo is on the rainy east side of the Big Island, and charging options are far more limited than in Honolulu. Check the list below before you head out, and keep a backup station in mind.
If you are driving to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the road climbs steadily, which uses extra energy. Leave Hilo with plenty of charge, and expect to regain some on the way back down.
Crossing to Kona on Saddle Road is a long, high-elevation drive with very few places to stop. Start fully charged and do not count on finding a charger along the way.
If you rented an EV, ask the rental company where it expects you to charge and what level of charge you must return it with. Planning that on day one saves stress at the end of the trip.
