Tips for cheap charging in Anchorage
Anchorage has the most charging choices in the state, so this is where you should fill up before any trip down the Seward Highway toward the Kenai Peninsula or up the Glenn and Parks Highways. Distances between towns are long, and cold weather and mountain grades both eat into range.
Winter is the biggest factor in charging cost here. A cold battery charges slowly, so per-minute billing can get expensive from November through March. If you can, charge right after a drive while the battery is still warm, or precondition it on the way to the station.
Free Level 2 charging is most useful if you can leave the car parked for a few hours, such as at work, a hotel or a long shopping trip in Midtown. In deep cold, Level 2 sessions also add less range per hour, so plan for longer stops.
If you live in Anchorage with a garage, home charging is by far the cheapest and most reliable option, especially in winter. A warm garage also helps your range on cold mornings.
